The nature paradise Costa Rica measures only 51.000 km2 and is divided by a volcanic mountain range of which the highest point reaches up to 3800 mts. Between the Pacific and the Caribbean Ocean you can find almost all levels of tropical vegetation. Perfect conditions for more species of animals and plants than you can find in all of Europe. That is why you should always carry a camera on your trips. Here are some of our animal pictures that we took on our mountain bike tours or at the Paraíso del Cocodrilo Hotel. Take to you time and have fun. .

Brüllaffe

Howler monkeys are some of the animals of Costa Rica that can be seen most frequently. Their howling cannot pass by unheard, especially before sunrise. The whole group is lead from one tree to another by an old male.

Nasenbär

Another animal that can be seen easily in Costa Rica is the Pizote. The pizote is related to the racoon and has

a highly developed sense of smell which allows him to find food such as fruits, mice, spiders and lizards. You usually find them in groups that are composed of adult females and young animals. The males tend to wander around by themselves. The pizote "Butzi" visits us frequently and is usually fed with great bananas.

Crocodiles are typical inhabitants of

Costa Rican rivers. They enjoy sunbathing on the sand banks but go under water whenever they hear the smallest sound. It is recommended to avoid walking through a river by foot or to swim in them. Attention, crocodiles!

Armadillos are acitve at night and wander through the bushes in search of insects and fruits. These animals are almost blind and are protected by a hard armor that covers the body.

Iguanas can reach a length of 2 meters, however, most of these animals measure about one meter. They are very good climbers and that is why they can be seen very often in trees.

Leguan

If you sit on the beach and don't move then eventually everything around you will start moving. We are dealing with Hermit crabs that live in snail shells. Most of them measure a cm but depending on the species they can reach a body size of 10 cm.

Kolibri

Shortly after sunrise you will see Hummingbirds flying from one tropical plant to the other in search for nectar. They measure 9 cm and weigh only 4,6 grams. You can hear the male birds from fairly far away, especially in the morning.

Ara

The Scarlet Macaws of Costa Rica can only be seen at the pacific coast. They usually move from tree to tree as a couple, looking for food or to climb around together.

The Black-head Trogon can only be found in the north western part of Costa Rica. He feeds on insects, other non-vertebrae and fruits. For nesting they build caves in rotten trees or termite nests with their beaks or claws.

Braunpelikan

The Brown Pelican belong to the most impressive gliders and fishing plungers of the world. You can find them almost everywhere at the pacific coast.

Motmot

The colored Blue-crowned Motmot is with its long tail feathers one of the most beautiful birds of Costa Rica. Motmots are related to the kingfisher. They build their nests in a hole in the earth.

Arakari

The Toucanet is a litlle cousin of the Toucan. They search for fruits and insects in groups of about 10 birds and move around in the tree tops.

Papageien

The Parakeets love to "attack" fruit trees in large groups and with lot's of noise. They spend all of their life as a couple and you can observe pairs that sit together exchanging caresses without end.

Rabengeier

The human notion that vultures only eat carrion is not correct when it comes to the Black Vulture, they also eat fruit. They also represent a great threat to new-born sea turtles.
